Lying offshore from La Rochelle, the island is accessible from La Rochelle by boat, bus or car. Particularly good to take a bike there across the spectacular bridge from the mainland (or hire one when you get there !). At any time of year, cyclists can enjoy the 90kms of cycle paths wending their way through the pine forests, vineyards, nature reserves and salt marshes.
The white cottages open green shutters onto narrow streets vivid with hollyhocks. The harbours, protected by fortifications or nestling close to a bell tower used by sailors as a landmark, are filled with yachts. |
